Recall it when it counts

Knowing something isn’t enough — you need to reach it on demand. Practise exactly that.

You knew the answer yesterday, but in the exam it won’t come. Retrieval is a skill of its own, and the best way to build it is to practise recalling — not to re-read.

What the science says

Test yourself

Practising recall is one of the most reliable ways to strengthen long-term memory — even when you get answers wrong (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006; McDermott, 2021).

Space it out

Spreading practice over days beats cramming for long-term retention (Cepeda et al., 2006).

Practise like the real thing

Recall is easier when practice matches the way you’ll be tested (Tulving & Thomson, 1973).

Try this

  • ✓Study once, then close the book and write everything you remember.
  • ✓Revise after 1 day, 3 days and 7 days.
  • ✓Mix question types: free recall, short answer, application.
  • ✓Practise under a timer if your exam is timed.
